What are the new recycling rules?

What are the new recycling rules, what can and can’t you put in the bin and why are certain things no longer able to be reused?

To avoid confusion, the Department of Communications, Climate Action and Environment has drawn up a new list of items.

Coffee cups and soft plastic wrappers are just some of the items which many of us mistakenly believe belong in our recycling bins.

However, in recent months, China enforced a ban on the import of plastic materials and other recycled waste.

In 2016, more than 95 per cent of Ireland’s plastic had been sent there to be repurposed.

The change means that Ireland has had to review what is recyclable – with many of the old items that were allowed now off the recycling menu.

To avoid confusion, the Department of Communications, Climate Action and Environment has drawn up a new list of items that can and can’t be reused.

The list is the same whether you’re living in Dublin or Donegal, with Minister Denis Naughten saying: “Removing confusion will play a huge role in improving the quality of the material that goes in the recycle bin.
